Our pals at America OnLine have found another way to annoy mailing list
managers.

Some mail I've sent as list maintainer to two customers of AOL has been
bounced back with the message that (not verbatim) "this user does not accept
this type of message." There is no detail on what sort of message the user
will accept.

So far I've received five bounces with that as the explanation:

1. A subscriber on AOL sent in a signoff request, and my automated acknow-
ledgment for mail to the list's -request address was returned to me.

2. When I processed the signoff request (I maintain the membership rolls
manually) and sent him a note confirming that he was removed, my note
   was returned to me.

3. Another AOL customer asked to subscribe, and as in #1 the acknowledgment
   was bounced back to me.

4. I sent her an explanation that it would not make sense to add anyone who
rejects mail from the list, and THAT bounced.

5. Not receiving the letters from my end that bounced in incidents #4 and
#5 -- or perhaps knowing fully well what was happening and thinking her
pranks were clever -- she sent in another request to subscribe, and once
again, the acknowledgment bounced because it was that mysterious "type of
message" that she will not accept. Since I know from #4 that she won't
accept my hand-typed mail either, I did not respond.
