Why not set something up so a list owner can add her/his list to
the automated machinery? Validating that it's the real list owner
might be tricky -- notification to owner-listname or whatever
would probably be a reasonably good check to start with, see if
anyone complains -- but if the list owner has at least some
control over it, you won't get slammed for violating someone's
privacy.
A procedure that might work is have the list owner enter
appropriate info into a Web form, at which point s/he is given an
e-mail address that will function as the gateway. At AOL's end,
you wait until notes start arriving at that address, then send a
notification to the list owner (via the usual MLM conventions, not
the address given on the Web form) saying that it appears the list
gateway is functioning and ask if it is okay to open it up, and
perhaps give the owner a password to use for future management.
Maintaining the illusion that the list owner owns the material
even after it goes through the gateway, sounds to me like a real
good policy.
