yes, sendmail is quite inefficient with large queues. the trick is
defining large. majordomo (and add-ons) will help you manage sendmail but
you go one better by using a transport agent that is designed not to
overload your machine. i use qmail on my delivery machine because it's
fast and i use qmail everywhere else because it's secure.
yes, there are people out there with extremely vocal opinions about
sendmail being better (of course there could be a vested interest because
of a FAQ they themselves maintain), and under very carefully controlled lab
experiments, that might be true. however, i have not seen any convincing
arguments from anyone that indicate that the recent releases of qmail are
not the best general-purpose smtp mta.
as a secure and reliable general-purpose mta, qmail simply has no equals,
and no serious challengers.
however this may change when wietse venema writes his sendmail replacement.
btw, some people appear to be adverse to qmail because the author is blunt,
abrasive, terse and impatient (the sum approximates rude and arrogant) and
he appears to be just that but that's no more sensible than using sendmail
because the author is kind, patient, humourous and polite (which he is).
