A few weeks ago, I mentioned that I was going into beta testing on
SmartBounce, an application designed to intelligently process mail
bounces. Well, the early-beta phase is now complete, and the first
public beta is ready for broader testing.
Bear in mind: This is STILL a beta release!
Here is the quickie summary; see below for instructions on how to
get more information, including where to DL the public beta ...
The application runs on Mac (68K and PPC) and Windows (95 and 3.1,
though the 3.1 version is a faceless app) platforms. Since the code
is still just straight ANSI C, it runs in a Unix console window --
in other words, it ain't pretty. It'll get pretty later, but for now
I'm focusing on functionality.
Important Note: It does NOT matter what platform your list server is
running on; SmartBounce is designed to be processed off line from the
list. My list runs on a Unix box, but I process my bounces on a Mac.
(Um, *yes*, I use SmartBounce for this. ;-)
The server types currently supported are:
MANUAL (no automated server)
LISTPROC
MAJORDOMO
LISTSERV(R) <g>
NTMAIL
AUTOSHARE
(I think that's everyone.) If your list server is not supported, refer
to the SmartBounce documentation for information on what you need to
provide to me to GET it supported. (It's pretty simple.) Note, also, that
you *can* run SmartBounce even if your MLM is not curently supported; the
only real problem is that the server file will not be generated in the
proper format for your MLM. (Again, see the docs for an explanation.)
One final note: This is NOT a pedestrian application; you MUST read the
documentation in order to use SmartBounce effectively! (In other words,
I'm not smart enough to make it easy to use. Sorry about that, but it's
something of a fundamental limitation for me.)
